How to disable or not show world imagery basemap?

edited May 2019 in Editor

In the project area that we're building, the satellite basemap shows the old situation with roads and trees in places where we don't want them. Although the objects shown by the basemap are not present as physical objects in the tygron model, the image does 'pollute' the visual presentation of the new situation.

E.g. We removed a building that represented a large parking space, but the the basemap still shows the parking space. For the user session we want that part of the area unused (if there is a building, a stakeholder has to demolish it before being able to build something else). But we also want to cover up the basemap with something that looks like grass for example. The surface terrain types only seem to be a highly transparent texture overlay, so that doesn't cover the satellite basemap.

Is there a way to cover up a part of the basemap with grassland for example, without placing a building?

  • Hi Ron, the satellite base map is default in the Platform, you cannot turn this off or cover it up. We will write down your question as feedback for the future!

  • Hi Hedi, that's unfortunate. We really hope there will be a sollution in the near future. Do you think there might be some sort of a workaround for this? I've attached a screenshot which shows our problem. Especially the difference between trees and sand, but also the pressence of buildings in the satellite image, creates an incorrect perception of landuse which in our oppinion is very distracting for a user. But anyways, thanks for the respond!

    Hi Boing,

The only workaround I can think of now, is to create a new terrain type, give this terrain a suitable color and add it to the project:

    • Go to the button Terrain and add a Surface Type
    • Select this New Surface Type and in the right panel, go to the attributes tab.
    • Add the COLOR attribute and give it the value 1
    • Then save this attribute and choose in the color picker the color you want
    • Go to the General tab and click on Draw Area. Draw the terrain on the location where you don't want to see the satellite map
    • Remember that you can't undo this action

This will disguise the satellite map a bit (not completely).
Notice that changing terrain affects certain calculation models, for example the Rainfall overlay, Heatstress and Livability
Another option therefore is to change the color of an already existing terrain type (for example open land) and draw this terrain on your project location. An existing terrain type has already specific attribute values used in the calculation models. Keep in mind that when you change the color of an existing terrain type, other parts of the map that have this terrain type will also change color.

  • Hi Godelief,

I've already tried to change the color of the existing terrain type. However the overlay for the terrain types has a relatively high transparency, so it doesn't cover up the sattelite image enough. But thanks for thinking with us

  • After an extra mail from Godelief I think it's good to post another message in this thread for future users. Because apparently it is possible to cover up the satellite image.

The only way to do this is to define the terrain type yourself. If you use the default terrain type and just change the colour, nothing happens. But when you import a polygon to (re)define the terrain type, this polygon covers the satellite image (also if the uploaded terrain type is the same as the default type for that location).

In our case, where we wanted to implement a completely new plan for the area, this gives a better view of the plan (see attached image). The user/stakeholder can also get a better overview of the space that's available for new functions.

  • Hoi,

    Hi @Boing and @Jesse Jager ,

In the Tygron Platform 2020 release, the option to set a non transparent color for new constructions is implemented.

Each construction has a new attribute (terrain_mix). With this attribute you can set the transparency from not transparent to transparant).

See also the Wiki for more information.

The Tygron Platform 2020 release will be available  on the Preview server (available for all customers at the start of January 2020) and on the LTS server in the first quarter of 2020.
